Located in the northwest of the country, Banteay Meanchey is one of Cambodia’s newest provinces, created in the 1980s from the norththern chunk of Battambang. Sisophon is the province capital. The area was part of the extensive Khmer empire, with its most notable remains the Banteay Chhmar temple in the north of the province, built in 12th century towards the 13th century.
The province is 2nd rank after Battambang in the quality and quantity of the rice it produces which can serve the whole population of Cambodia.
