Mean Vannak's Success Story

Micro credit enables farmers to enjoy better life

Mean Vannak and her husband, together with a son, used to have only a house, but no capital to expand their farming in their home village of Thnal, Da commune, Kampong Leng district, Kampong Chhnang province.

The family did not have enough kitchen appliances even pots or bowls due to minor income from their small farming and irregular jobs.

However, Vannak’s family has experienced better living standards since she accessed micro credit from VisionFund in 2004. She initially borrowed US$ 25, and increased to US$ 150 the following years to buy agricultural equipment for scaling up produce and livestock.

Now Vannak can net around US$ 2 per day. She has had her house renovated and purchased cows, a pumping machine and household entertainment amenities including a TV. She wants her 4-year-son, who is at primary school, to pursue education as long as he can.

“I have repaired the house and bought cows. I have pigs on my own; before I raised them for other people. My living conditions are better; before I faced much difficulty,” Vannak says.

“In the future I want my son to study further; I don’t let him stop study. I think that the company is good as it helps the poor get out of poverty.”
